Why the Same Emoji Looks Different on iPhone and Android
By Emojis Copy and Paste
Understand why emoji artwork changes between phones and apps, why copy and paste cannot force an iPhone design, and when an image is more suitable.
Copying an emoji normally copies text, not the picture you see. The receiving software decides how to draw it. A phone, browser, operating system or messaging app may use a different design.
Different drawing, same character
Outline, shading and small facial details can change without the text changing. Unicode defines characters and sequences, while vendors create their own artwork. Some applications use their own emoji set rather than the operating system’s. See the Unicode emoji FAQ for the distinction between characters and images.
Imagine writing “Good idea 🙂” to a colleague. A slightly different smile can change the tone a reader perceives, even though the same character arrived. When tone matters, make the sentence clear instead of asking a tiny face to do all the work.
Can copy and paste force the iPhone version?
Not as ordinary Unicode text. A site promising to copy an “iPhone emoji” cannot generally make every Android app display Apple’s drawing. A sticker or image is a different kind of content, not a new text emoji.
For a poster or slide, a licensed image is useful because you control the visual. For a chat message, text is easier to edit, search and read with assistive technology. Consider the destination before choosing a format.
Our downloads use OpenMoji
The image download on our emoji pages uses the OpenMoji illustration, clearly labeled with its license. You can choose a transparent PNG or an SVG. It is not advertised as an Apple, Samsung or Google image.
If you are seeing a blank box, two separate symbols or a missing flag, that is a compatibility problem rather than just an artistic difference. Start with our display troubleshooting guide. To identify the actual text in a message, use the decoder.
