Why Are Emojis Showing as Boxes or Question Marks?

By Emojis Copy and Paste

Troubleshoot missing emoji boxes, question marks and broken sequences. Find out what to check before changing your keyboard or installing a font.

An empty box where an emoji should be usually means the receiving app or device cannot draw that character. A question mark can also result from text being replaced or damaged along the way. Neither tells you what the original emoji meant.

A quick test

Copy a familiar emoji such as 😀 and the problem emoji into the same plain-text note. Then try a second app on the same device.

  • If 😀 works but the other emoji does not, support for that particular character or sequence may be missing.
  • If the emoji works in one app but not another, focus on the failing app rather than replacing your whole keyboard.
  • If the character is already a literal question mark after copying, a display update cannot reconstruct the original. Ask the sender to send it again or name it.

What to try next

Install available updates for the affected app and operating system through their normal update settings. Restart the app, then repeat the same test. Avoid installing a random “emoji repair” extension: first establish whether the problem is limited to one application.

An emoji that looks like several separate people or symbols may be a joined sequence the device does not support. The text can be intact even when the display differs. Unicode documents this distinction in its emoji FAQ.

If you need a message to be clear today

Use words alongside an older, familiar emoji. For an invitation, “Birthday party on Saturday 🎂” still communicates the purpose if the picture fails. A screenshot preserves appearance but is not a replacement for accessible text.

Our emoji decoder can identify a copied character when it exists in our library. It cannot recover a character that has already been replaced with “?”. See also why emojis look different across devices.
